Village Fertility Pharmacy hosts "Environmental Toxins and Infertility" Oct. 7

09/28/2009

WALTHAM, Mass. – Two local, renowned health experts will discuss the environmental, diet and lifestyle factors that can impact fertility at a dinnertime lecture hosted by Village Fertility Pharmacy on Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The specialty fertility pharmacy will partner with RESOLVE of the Bay State and New England Nurses for Reproductive Medicine to present “Environmental Toxins and Infertility” for infertility patients and nurses. The evening will consist of a buffet dinner from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by presentations from Harvard School of Public Health’s Russ Hauser, MD, ScD, MPH, and Jorge Chavarro, MD, ScD, at the pharmacy’s headquarters at 335 Bear Hill Road in Waltham. Both the dinner and the lecture are free for infertility patients and nurses; dinner registration is required.

“Dr. Hauser and I are thrilled to share our collective knowledge about how fertility can be influenced by some of the everyday items we use and the simple decisions we make,” said Chavarro. “Our goal is educate and inform infertility patients and nurses, and help them make better choices that can improve patients’ chances for a successful pregnancy.”

Chavarro is currently an instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School and is the co-author of The Fertility Diet: Groundbreaking Research Reveals Natural Ways to Boost Ovulation and Improve Your Chances of Getting Pregnant. At the event on Oct. 7, he will present new information about how diet and lifestyle decisions can affect fertility in both men and women.

Hauser is a professor of environmental and occupational epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and will discuss the fertility-impacting endocrine disrupting chemicals found in many everyday items. He will focus on bisphenol A (BPA), a compound used to make plastics, because it has received a lot of scientific and public scrutiny over the past year. He will also share new, unpublished, preliminary data on the association of BPA with in vitro fertilization outcomes, as well as exposure sources of BPA.

Nurses who attend this event will receive continuing education units (CEUs) in the form of 1.5 Contact Hours. Pre-registration is required by Oct. 5 to attend the dinner portion of this program at 6 p.m., but walk-ins are welcome at the 7 p.m. lecture. Please RSVP to Linda Romano at lromano@villagepharmacy.com or by calling (781) 810-4109.
